Karl A. Scheidt Drug discovery, bioorganic chemistry, & small molecule-driven chemical biology

Research Interests

Nature has long provided an exceptional pharmacopeia of small molecules (natural products) that exhibit unique biological activities. Instinctively, chemists have derived inspiration from these natural products, not only as targets that catalyze advances in chemical methods and strategies, but also to decipher the intricacies in their molecular anatomy that furnish their distinctive pharmacological effect. The research in my laboratory focuses on the design of new reactions and tactics that facilitate the construction of complex natural products that are of biological and structural interest. Subsequently, my laboratory concentrates on the development of novel small molecule scaffolds that serve as synthetic analogues of natural product that allows for the expedited discovery of the molecular mechanism of action of these compounds. Current areas of interest include oncology (MEK/ERK, telomerase) and neuroscience (serotonin receptor antagonists).
