Initiatives

Recruiting a diverse class

Since the program's inception, representatives of IBiS staff, faculty, and students have attended national meetings such as SACNAS and ABRCMS. IBiS also participates in The Graduate School's programs that host undergraduate researchers from diverse backgrounds, such as Introduction to Graduate Education at Northwestern (IGEN) and the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP).

Distinguished Role Model in Life Sciences

The DRiLS lecture series was established in 2008 in order to offer IBiS students greater diversity of role models. Speakers are selected for their outstanding science and mentoring by a committee of IBiS students. The lecturers serve as role models for underrepresented students.

Diversity in Biological Sciences Council

DiBS was established in 2018 to serve graduate students from diverse backgrounds within the IBiS program. Specifically, DiBS aims to cultivate a lasting network and community of students for underprioritized groups, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+ individuals, international students, and other URM groups within IBiS, by advocating for the student population through inclusive community building, providing professional development, connecting with other graduate programs, and contributing to diversity recruitment.

Excellence in Leadership and Engagement Award

This award, established in 2019, recognizes IBiS graduate students for their commitment to leadership, service, and outreach efforts. IBiS students who go above and beyond to serve their community, create a more diverse and equitable environment within STEM, and support their fellow IBiS students, are encouraged to apply.
